Overview

GM Computing can work with the following operating systems (OS):

  • All versions of DOS
  • All versions of Windows
  • Linux (I use SUSE but happy to handle any other)

Supply

Windows & DOS

I can supply genuine Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT4, 2000, XP Home and XP Professional master disks at considerably lower prices than most suppliers.  Sometimes I have second user master disks which are cheaper still, and since they are just as good as a new disk, are even better value. Example prices are £65.00 for a new XP Home Upgrade disk. I still have full sets of Windows 3.11,  Windows for Workgroups 3.1, DOS 6.2 and earlier OS.

Linux

Linux is essentially a free operating system, which can be downloaded from a number of suppliers. The full download of SUSE Linux V10 for example, is 5 CDs - a total of some 3000 MBytes! I can supply these 5 CDs for £5.00. Alternatively, SUSE have produced a “Linux Live” DVD, which runs SUSE Linux directly from your DVD drive, without in any way interfering with your Windows installation - a superb way of trying Linux out. A copy of this DVD can also be provided for £5.00. I can also provide this service for products from other Linux distributors. Please note that these charges are for the supply of the blank disks and for doing the recording - it does not in any way include a cost element for the Linux software.

Gosh - they’re so different, aren’t they!

Installing

Windows

Installing Windows can be somewhat difficult! I provide a clean installation service for £15.00, which includes supply of all the device drivers required by the new OS. This means it’s up to you to install everything else i.e. your applications (like Microsoft Office and Games). Of course I can be asked to install all the applications as well at an additional cost which will depend on the number and complexity of your applications. This can be particularly useful if you have lost one or more of the master disks for your applications.

It is possible to upgrade from an older to newer Windows system (e.g. from Windows 98 to Windows XP) which retains your application installations. However, this is not guaranteed by Microsoft to be always successful (but usually is). Nonetheless, if you task me to do it and it fails, then I will carry out a clean installation at no extra charge. The charge for installing an upgrade is from £25.00 upwards, depending on the complexity of your system. It may also be noted that some older software and hardware will not operate correctly under Windows XP, and must be replaced by more up-to-date items if their functionality is to be retained.

Linux

Installing Linux is much easier with the latest versions than it used to be. However, if it is to co-exist with Windows or other OS, disk partitioning takes some care. I provide a clean disk installation of Linux for £15.00, and a conversion from a Windows system to a dual Windows/Linux system for £25.00 upwards, depending on the complexity of your system.
