The Repair Process

Repairing a PC consists essentially of identifying the faulty component and replacing it! This is by no means an easy task since the “faulty component” might be an item of software - an application or, more usually, the operating system itself. Windows is a fragile piece of software, easily corrupted by faulty hardware or software applications, a power cut, operator error or malicious software (virus/malware). Repairing Windows is a time consuming task and re-installing Windows and all applications even more so. So, it is essential to be sure of the serviceability of all the hardware before we start to investigate the integrity of the software. Reliable hardware diagnosis tools are therefore essential.

GMC uses as the core of its hardware diagnosis facilities the highly rated Eurosoft PC Check and QA+Win32 tools, supported by a wide range of other computer and network hardware test and diagnosis tools. All repair work is Warranted.

The Workshop

The main test computer in the workshop is equipped with DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98 (FE and SE), Windows NT4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP (Home and Professional) and Linux operating systems to permit comparative tests of components to be carried out. The workshop has a 100 MBS Ethernet network to which any test computer can be connected; the network includes broadband cable and wireless routers. The main server in the workshop provides massive disk storage and contains all common applications for test purposes. If the customer has no backup of his data, all user data on machines under repair are backed up on USB Hard Drives before work commences (as far as the condition of the machine permits). Copies of the backup to DVD can be provided to customers on request.

Repair Costs

Fault diagnosis is carried out free of charge, assuming the computer or other equipment is brought to GMC for diagnosis, and that the equipment is subsequently repaired by GMC. Following diagnosis of the fault, a free quote will be provided for the repair. If the customer wishes to repair the fault himself, or take it elsewhere for a second opinion or repair, there will be a fixed low fee for the diagnosis, often as low as £10.00. It is much preferred for the diagnosis to be carried out at GMC rather than at your home or site. The reason for this is that comprehensive diagnosis tools such as Eurosoft PC Check take an hour or two to run, so it is not cost-effective to carry this out in your home or site. However, in some cases, such as with network problems, on-site diagnosis is unavoidable, which will incur a diagnosis cost irrespective of whether the fault is repaired by GMC or not. Please contact me on 01454-228704 or 07769780656, or e-mail me at gerry@millward.org.uk for guidance on current prices, or a quote for a specific item or task.
