Free and Low Cost Software List

On the World Wide Web (WWW) there exists thousands and thousands of free and low cost items of software which you can download. Many of them compare well with equivalent expensive commercial products; many of them are complete and utter rubbish, or worse, dangerous to the health of your computer. On this page, I have attempted to list some of the better and more useful free items for you to download if you wish. If you do, it will be entirely at your own risk.

Free software is referred to as “Freeware” and low cost software as “Shareware”. The latter is almost always “try before buy” e.g. download for free and pay after 30 days if you want to keep it. Following the Freeware list is a list of both Freeware and Shareware library sources.

MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER IS PROPERLY PROTECTED BY ANTI-VIRUS AND ANTI-SPYWARE SOFTWARE BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD ANYTHING.

Freeware List

On some of the websites, the free version is well hidden - but it’s there somewhere! Don’t be lured into downloading the version that costs money, unless you really want the extra bells and whistles that the commercial version has. In these lists we are, in general, referring to Windows software, since Linux applications are, by definition, usually free.

Sources of Freeware and Shareware Software

BEWARE: Some sources of freeware and/or shareware include software that uses underhand methods of selling. A common trick is to offer a “free” scan of your computer for viruses and spyware. If you accept, the scan is carried out, but false reports of infestations of viruses and/or spyware are then given. You are then told these can only be removed by buying their removal software. Always reject any such unsolicited offers. If in doubt, ask GMC.
