Can My Computer be Upgraded?

Very old computers having AT cases cannot really be upgraded because of the  limitations of AT motherboards. Modern motherboards will not fit in an AT case. The pictures below show how to tell an AT case from the more modern ATX case. In most cases, an ATX computer can be upgraded; however, the older the motherboard, the more extensive (and expensive) the upgrade is likely to be. The law of diminishing returns applies here - it may be more cost effective to scrap (or give away) the old machine and buy a new one. GM Computing will provide free quotes to upgrade your machine to the desired performance and functionality.

Upgrade Examples

Please note that the cost of computer components is very volatile, and the price guidance given below is not guaranteed. Quoted costs include installation etc

One of the most cost-effective upgrades in terms of performance increase is to install additional Random Access Memory (RAM). This is a simple task that will cost only tens of pounds, depending on the amount of extra memory installed.

Another simple upgrade is to discard a bulky CRT Monitor and buy a modern flat-panel monitor. Providing it has a VGA connector, this is a straight plug-in replacement, otherwise an adaptor will be required.

The addition of a DVD reader/writer is also a simple upgrade costing less than £50.

Upgrading your video card is often required to improve your video processing speed, or to play modern computer games. This is a relatively simple task (subject to compatibility issues), costing little more than the basic cost of the video card for installation and setup. Video cards cost from £25 to £300+, depending on performance.

More complex upgrades concern the replacement of the main processor (CPU), which can be carried out up to the limit of your motherboard. A new CPU can cost from £60 upwards. The motherboard can also be replaced. A new motherboard and CPU can cost from £110 upwards.

A hard disk replacement to give you greatly increased storage is a little more complex since your existing disk needs to be “cloned” onto the new disk. This usually also requires an operating system repair. However, this can cost less than £70.

An upgrade of your operating system (e.g. from Windows 98 to Windows XP) can be the most difficult. A fresh install of the new operating system is usually recommended to ensure any existing operating system corruptions and flaws are not transferred. However, this will require you to re-install all your applications (such as Microsoft Office) which can be very time consuming. Nevertheless, if your prefer, an operating system upgrade can be carried out. Moreover, although Microsoft does not guarantee it will work (although it usually does), if it doesn’t work, GM Computing will carry out a fresh installation of Windows free of further cost. See Software for further information.

Whatever your interest in upgrading your computer, GM Computing will offer sound and objective advice.
